Headaches are a common health-related condition in Australia. Up to 85% of the population will experience a headache at some point in the next year. Primary headaches, identified as cluster and tension headaches, have many known causes. An important cause, that is often unknown to doctors, is cervical dysfunction. This is where your chiropractic may be able to help!
As previously mentioned, headaches can have many different triggers. Some are lifestyle related, such as stress, poor diet, lack of exercise and dehydration. Unbeknown to most people, poor posture can be a key trigger in developing headaches. Daily habits such as prolonged sitting at a computer, watching TV or texting can lead to poor posture. It is these behaviours that can put excessive strain on the muscles of the neck and upper back resulting in referred pain into the head. Poor posture and spine joint fixations, causing headaches, may be improved with regular chiropractic care. A combination of treatments including joint adjustments and retraining the muscles may alleviate this referred pain and reduce headaches. In Australia, around 3 million people visit chiropractors every year to treat/manage headaches and other spine-related issues.
A study conducted at Macquarie University evaluated 127 migraine suffers, ranging from 10 to 70 years of age. The results showed 80% of people who received chiropractic care reported an improvement in their migraines. These results correlate to our own practice statistics that show headaches are the 2nd most improved issue our patients’ experience.
