It’s World Spine Day!
Each year World Spine Day is observed around the world on October 16 to encourage spinal health by sharing information on good spinal health habits. An initiative of the International Bone and Joint Decade, World Spine Day began in 2000 to alert the public globally about the serious impact if spinal disability on individuals and health care systems and to promote better spinal health habits. To help get you moving the Just Start Walking app, launched by the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (CAA) has tracked more than 279,239 kilometers worth of walks since then. The app is a free, easy to use program to help encourage people to engage in regular physical activity. The Just Start Walking App makes it easy to track your walks via GPS and log your walking history. Not only can you measure and map your walks, you can monitor your progress by tracking your history.
Our gadget culture means more patients are presenting with spine complaints at a younger age compared with previous generations. More screen time on technology is leading to posture issues. Moreover when combined with longer commutes we are spending more time sitting than ever before. Common postural problems chiropractors are seeing include an increase in forward head posture, round shoulders and forward pelvis in young Australians (under 29 years) symptomatic of our increased screen time while slouching is highest in older people (50 + years).
